MINDSHIFT HOLIDAY HR BRIEF

Benchmark results: HR FOCUS 2010

MindShift would like to wish you all

a Happy New Year!

2009 was a tough and exciting year for many organisations. For HR, the year involved challenge and change, as it played a key role in forecasting and managing the people-related implications of the business situation. A new year and a new decade is about to start. What have we learned from 2009 and how do we view the coming year? What are our key focus areas for 2010? With these questions in mind, MindShift performed a mini-survey asking senior HR and management professionals to give their input. The results of this benchmark are found below.

Thank you to everyone who answered the benchmark questions! By providing feedback, you have contributed to the Baltic Ecoregion Programme aimed at saving our unique marine ecosystem.

Mini-benchmark results

HR focus in the past year

Benchmark results indicate that re-organisation was the 2009 HR topic of the year, driven by a need for downsizing and organisational change aimed at managing costs.

Performance management also ranked high on the list. With recruitment frozen and personnel cuts underway, companies turned their attention to maximizing the performance of current staff and finding new and better ways of working. For some MindShift clients a focus on performance has meant designing and rolling-out corporate-wide performance management processes; strengthening links between performance management and other key people areas; or by focusing on performance efforts in specific strategic areas, such as innovation.

HR process and tool development was also on the agenda for some with a focus on streamlining HR and people-management work through the development and implementation of IT tools and the globalization of already existing processes.

HR focus in 2010

Benchmark results indicate that 2010 will involve a shift in priorities on the HR agenda, with many organizations turning their attention to management planning and development. Due to recent business and organizational change, companies are feeling a need to review their management populations to ensure that they have the right pipelines in place to meet leadership needs as the economy turns. It is also worth noting that several MindShift clients are examining new ways of providing other business-critical talent groups with the focused approach to development formerly reserved for managers.

Re-organisation remains high on the agenda, however with a greater focus on change management and organisational development than was the case in 2009. In terms of HR Operational Excellence, companies are initiating or renewing efforts in HR transformation, HR performance development, HR competence management, and change in HR delivery mode. While 2009 was dedicated to managing organisational challenges at large, it appears that HR functions will give their own development a stronger place on the 2010 agenda.

2009 compared to 2010

When considering their ability to act on development needs, many HR managers believe that 2010 will be a better year than 2009 (see graph below). Participants indicate that they will have a more strategic and forward-looking focus in 2010 highlighted by, for example, increased emphasis on strategic workforce planning, HR strategy development, management planning, and employer branding.
